At Human Service Chamber of Franklin County (HSC), we know that access to reliable transportation is a critical need for our community, especially for those experiencing poverty or other vulnerabilities. This need becomes even more urgent during periods of extreme weather, when simply getting to essential services like cooling centers, warming shelters, medical appointments, or even the grocery store can become a life-threatening challenge.
For many individuals and families, the cost of a bus or train ticket can be a significant barrier, preventing them from accessing vital resources. During heat waves, the risk of heatstroke is drastically increased, particularly for those experiencing homelessness, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. Similarly, during frigid winter temperatures, the risk of hypothermia and frostbite poses a severe threat. COTA’s decision to offer free fares during these critical periods removes this financial barrier, ensuring that everyone has access to safe and reliable transportation when they need it most.
“We do not want anyone to risk their health because they might not have the bus fare to reach shelter,” COTA President/CEO Monica TellezFowler shared in a press release. “We are grateful to the COTA Board of Trustees for taking this important step to enhance our service to our region.”
This isn’t just about convenience; it’s about survival. Imagine trying to get to a doctor’s appointment in the sweltering heat when you’re already struggling with health issues, or trying to reach a warming shelter when the wind chill is below zero and you have nowhere else to go. COTA’s commitment to our community makes these crucial journeys possible.
HSC applauds COTA for its leadership and its commitment to the well-being of Franklin County residents. This resolution demonstrates a deep understanding of the challenges faced by our most vulnerable populations and a proactive approach to addressing those challenges. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this vital resource during periods of extreme heat and cold.
