“I help people enroll in Medicaid or marketplace insurance plans, but really it’s about looking for solutions to whatever you’re going through. It’s about educating and exposing people to the programs and resources out there. I’m a conductor.

Some people come to me for help with SNAP applications. But that application needs verification, so now we’re talking about utility bills. And then, it’s ‘Oh, you get power from the city. Did you know there’s a discount?’ Next thing you know, we’re talking about the JFS interview process and making sure you’ve got what you need for your application.

There’s no ‘average’ person we help. During the pandemic, we had people who made $80,000 a year but suddenly needed help. Sometimes childcare centers close so now parents got to play rock, paper, scissors to see who stays home with the kids and who keeps the job. Maybe you’re having car trouble. Maybe your rent’s past due. Life happens. You never know what someone went through yesterday.

MOFC and others can help with food, health care, and other options for healthy living. But remember YOU are your own best resource. It’s about finding your community, your local resources, learning who your elected officials are because the people who make the rules have not lived your life. So, get connected with those people. Remember: You’re your own best advocate. You’re a champion fighter!”

Debera Diggs aka “Momma Diggs” is a health care navigator with Mid-Ohio Food Collective, the largest food bank in Ohio and a collective of support.
